Reasons our milk is different and special:
It's Cow (and Calf) Friendly!
Of course, female mammals have to give birth in order to lactate. Usually calves are taken from their mothers and fed milk replacer so that all the milk is available for humans. At our dairy however, our cows keep their calves. There's no cheating either - we don't foster calves onto 'nanny' cows or wean early and pretend that's the same thing, each cow keeps her own baby for the natural suckling period of 9 months or more. After 12months the yearlings are separated from their mothers and put in a group with their buddies and older retired cows, once they have lost the urge to suck the whole herd is reunited. The boys are on grass all year round as is the rest of the herd. At the age of 2yrs I take the boys myself to the abattoir to ensure minimum stress. The beef is sold as Pasture For Life Beef directly from the farm gate and online. Go to our contact page to request our price list
Our milk is unpasteurised, unhomogenised and otherwise unadulterated. It comes out of the cow, goes into a bottle and then goes straight to you!
This means it comes with an old-fashioned creamline and because it comes from channel island Jersey cows it's extra creamy & luxurious.
Don't worry about your waistline: even 'high fat' milk is 95% fat free, and the old myths about natural fats being bad for you are slowly being busted by modern science. Raw milk is a perfect superfood & many of the beneficial vitamins etc. cling to the fat globules so keeping the cream is a savvy move for the health conscious.
On top of this our cows are completely urestrained for milking, unlike in a normal parlour - they each know their name, come to call and run in by themselves!
It Goes Against the Grain!
Our milk is truly grass fed, and we don't mean that the cows occasionally eat some grass along with their grain ration - they never receive grain at all! #PurelyPasture How does this benefit your health. Celiacs who find meat and dairy products from grain fed animals are impossible to digest quite happily eat our beef and milk - See link below
Why is this is this important for the environment?
Growing grain relies on large amounts of diesel-guzzling tractorwork to prepare the soil, keep the crop healthy with synthetic chemical applications and then harvest and transport the results! Grass however can be grown without most of this, and only enough to get the cows through the winter needs to be harvested and transported. Grass will also last for years whereas the cycle of grain growing must be repeated every year, so under a grassbased system the soil can be left alone to do it's own thing, even to build, rather than deplete.
So why pasture fed Dairy?
Because.....Healthy development requires a balance of naturally occurring fats but conventional western diets currently contain a surfeit of omega 6 which can lead to illness. Dairy from grass-fed cows has been shown to be dramatically higher in good fats like omega 3. Omega 3 is good for the brain, nervous system and joints and drinking grass-fed, full fat, milk is a practical way to cut the risk factors of a wide range of developmental and chronic health problems such as heart disease and diabetes.
· Conjugated Linoleic acid (CLA) which is found in higher concentrations in produce made from 'Pasture For Life' (properly grass fed) animals
· The omega 3 and CLA content in milk drops with the inclusion of grain in the diet which is why, organic or not, the only way interested consumers can be sure they are choosing the best milk, at least in terms of these health promoting facts is to choose Pasture-Fed certified products
· Dairy from grass-fed cows is higher in antioxidants like vitamin E which protects against damage from toxic-free radicals, which cause ageing. As well as beta carotene, lutein and zeaxanthine, B vitamins and the minerals calcium, magnesium and potassium.
· There is peer-reviewed scientific evidence that milk is a better rehydration and muscle repair drink than big brand ‘sports’ drinks, particularly if some glucose is added. This has led to headlines in sports and news media that chocolate milk is the best thing to drink after exercise
Is CAFD raw milk safe for us to drink?
Our hygiene standards are extremely high and we have the magic '5' from Waveney District Councils Environmental Health Office. The FSA (Food Standards Agency) registered our standard as a 'GOOD' this is the best/highest standard they'll award! We also undergo all the usual and extra tests and inspections for raw milk producers but of course, the best way to decide if our production is clean enough for you is to see it yourself! Watch the cows being milked - milking every morning.
Always open 24/7, 365.
We can even visit your school bringing a cow with her calf
